Hi all readers! In this article, I will explain a guide to understanding the concept of peace in Islam. We must believe, because this is so, that Islam is a religion of peace. Lots of data explaining that. But maybe you ask, is that right? Aren’t there some acts of violence committed by adherents of Islam? Maybe there are still many other questions. I will answer those questions in this article.
Peace in Quran and Hadith
All Readers! In Islam, Quran and Hadith are two important references for understanding Islam and providing solutions to problems of Muslim life. In Quran and the Hadith there is a very clear statement, that Islam is a religion of peace. Islam came to bring peace to the universe, not only humans. Now you notice some verses of Quran and Hadith below!
“And We have not sent you but as a mercy to the worlds.” (Al-Anbiyaa’ ; 107).
And when they said: O Allah! if this is the truth from Thee, then rain upon us stones from heaven or inflict on us a painful punishment But Allah was not going to chastise them while you were among them, nor is Allah going to chastise them while yet they ask for forgiveness . (Al-Anfaal [32-33).
“Verily I am sent to complete the noble character.” (The hadith is narrated by Ahmad, al-Musnad, 8729, Ibnu Sa’ad, ath-Thabaqât, 468, al-Bukhari, al-Adab, 273, al-Hakim, al-Mustadrak, 4187, and al-Baihaqi, as-Sunan al-Kubra, 19143).
“From Imran bin Hushain ra. That there was a woman from Juhainah meeting the Prophet – she was pregnant because of adultery – and said, “O prophet of Allah, I must be punished, do the punishment to me.” Then the Messenger of Allah called his guardian and said, “Be kind to her, when she gives birth, bring the baby to me.” So, it was done. After that, the woman was sentenced, the Prophet ordered that the woman’s clothes be added and tied tightly to her body, then stoned. Then the Messenger of Allah pray for her. Umar said, “Did you pray for her, O Prophet Allah, even though she had committed adultery?” He replied, “She truly repented if her repentance was divided between 70 residents of Medina, surely they would be enough. O Omar, do you get someone more than surrender himself because of Allah?”
If we understand some of the verses of Quran and hadith above, surely, we already know about the concept of peace in Islam. Are you still confused? Do not worry! Consider the conclusions below;
- In surah al-Anbiya’ verse 107 explained, that the main purpose of Allah sent the Prophet Muhammad is that he be a mercy to the universe. With what? With the teachings of Islam that he brought.
- In surah Al-Anfal verses 32-33 explained, that God will not torture a people if there is no messenger who teaches the teachings of Islam to them. Allah also will not torture a people as long as they ask forgiveness for their sins.
- The first hadith explains, that the other purpose of Allah sent the Prophet Muhammad was for him to perfect good ethics. That is, logically there are some people who have good ethics. But according to Islam it is less than perfect. That’s why he was sent to be a Prophet and Messenger.
- The second hadith explains, that even if someone has done wrong, but if he has repented, then he must be treated well like other people.
Violence by Muslims
All Readers! If we understand the brief explanation above, then surely, we already understand the concept of peace in Islam. But the question then is, how about the violence committed by Muslims?
There is one important thing I want to explain before I answer the question above. You need to know that there is a very big difference between religion and understanding of religion. The two things are very different and contradictory. One is sacred while the other is profane.
What I mean is, we must distinguish between Islam and understanding of Islam. Islam as a religion is sacred, while understanding of Islam is not sacred. Understanding of Islam is not sacred because it is the product of the human mind. That’s why it can accept wrong and can accept right.
Violence committed by Muslims stems from an understanding of Islam that is not sacred and untrue, not from Islam. I believe that. You also have to. Wrong understanding of something, if it is believed to be truth, then it will cause the wrong behavior.
How Bring Peace to the Universe?
Maybe one question that still remains is, if Islam is a religion of peace, then how does Islam manifest that for the universe?
Before I answer the question above, let us consider the following Quranic verses;
Go both to Pharaoh, surely, he has become inordinate Then speak to him a gentle word haply he may mind or fear . [Ta Ha ; 43-44).
All Readers! The above verse contains instructions to the Prophet Moses and his brother that they both come to Pharaoh. Maybe we all already know who Pharaoh. He was the ruler of ancient Egypt who once claimed to be God. Allah told Prophet Musa and his brother to speak to Pharaoh in good words.
Thus, Islam embodies peace for the universe in a good way. The teachings of Islam must also be taught in a good way; inviting someone to do good in a good way, and forbid someone to do bad in a good way.
I think that’s enough for an explanation about a guide to understanding concept of peace in Islam.
