Hi readers! In this article I will invite you to know the obligation to do good to both parents and the virtue of a mother in the teachings of Islam. I deliberately chose this topic, because I see in the reality of everyday life there are still many children who are disobedient to both parents.
Yups! Problems like that are often happening in our environment. In fact, we may often see, or know from the news of mass media, children hit their parents, shouted at their parents, and so on. Such behavior is hard about Islam.
To see the duties of obligation to both parents and the virtue of a mother in the teachings of Islam, I will convey some verses of the Qur’an and the hadith of the Prophet Muhammad to then we conclude.
Allah Ta’ala said;
And your Lord has commanded that you shall not serve (any) but Him, and goodness to your parents. If either or both of them reach old age with you, say not to them (so much as) “Ugh” nor chide them, and speak to them a generous word. (Al-Israa’ ; 23).
Say: Come I will recite what your Lord has forbidden to you– (remember) that you do not associate anything with Him and show kindness to your parents, and do not slay your children for (fear of) poverty– We provide for you and for them– and do not draw nigh to indecencies, those of them which are apparent and those which are concealed, and do not kill the soul which Allah has forbidden except for the requirements of justice; this He has enjoined you with that you may understand. (Al-An’aam ; 151).
From Abdullah ibn Umar radliyallaahu ‘anhumaa, he said, “Someone came to the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam to ask permission of him to perform jihad. He then asked, “Are your parents still alive?” The man replied, “Yes.” He said, “Do good to both.” (The hadith is narrated by al-Bukhari, al-Adab al-Mufrad, 5/2227 (5626), Muslim, 4/1975 (2549)).
From Abu Hurairah radliyallaahu ‘anhu, he said, “Someone came to meet Messenger of Allah shallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam. The person then asked, “O Messenger of Allah, who is the most righteous person with my service?” He replied, “Your mother.” The person asked, “Then who else?” He replied, “Your mother.” The person then asked, “Then who else? “He replied,” Your mother. “The man then asked again,” Then who else? “He replied,” Your father.” (The hadith is narrated by al-Bukhari, al-Adab al-Mufrad, 5/2227 (5627), and Muslim, 4/1974 (2548)).
If we look closely at some verses of the Qur’an and some of Muhammad’s hadiths above, then at least we can conclude some things as follows;
1. The command to do good to both parents is mentioned clearly in the Qur’an and Hadith.
2. Because the command is clearly stated, then doing good to both parents is mandatory. In other words, we must do good to both of them.
3. Islam strongly forbids a man from lawlessness to his parents, even if only saying “Ugh”.
4. Islam teaches us that when we speak with both of them, we use noble words.
5. The virtuous virtue of both parents overcomes the virtue of jihad.
6. In the teachings of Islam, respect for Mother exceeds honor to father. The comparison is 1 (one) to 3 (three).
I think the explanation of the topics discussed in this article is clear. I do not need to explain anymore. But here, after understanding the brief description above, let me say, “As much as any of our deeds of worship, if only we hurt the hearts of our parents, even if only a little, Heaven would not be ours.”
I think enough for this article. May be useful! Amen!
See you again in the next article!
