From Abu Ayyub al-Ansari, from the Prophet (Muhammad) sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, he said, “Whoever fasts in Ramadan, then he fasts six days in Shawwal, then fasting is like fasting for one year.”

From Tsauban, that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said, “Fasting in Ramadan is like fasting for ten months, and fasting for six days (in Shawwal) is like fasting for two months.” The hadith was narrated by Ibn Khuzaimah in his book ash-Shahih); 2110.

All Readers! There are some important things about these two hadiths that we should know about;

First; The two hadiths explain the virtues of the month of Shawwal.

Second; The first hadith narrated by Abu Ayyub al-Ansari explained that if Muslims had fasted for one month in the month of Ramadan, then they fasted again for six days in Shawwal, then it was as if they had fasted for one year. The point is that they will get the reward for fasting for one year.

Third; The second hadith explains that, fasting in the month of Ramadan is the same as fasting for ten months and fasting for six days in Shawwal is the same as fasting for two months. So, the total is twelve months.

Four; Both of these hadiths explain that fasting in Shawwal is not an obligation, but only a suggestion.

All Readers! That is a brief explanation of the virtues of the month of Shawwal. Do you understand? If you want to ask, please ask!
