The Meaning of Surah Tabbat (Abu Lahab) ~ Hi all readers! Do you know what surah Tabbat is? Other names for the surah are surah Abu Lahab and surah Masad. That is one of the suras in the Quran. In general, the surah explained about Abu Lahab and his wife. Maybe we all already know, that they both include people who are very hostile to the Prophet Muhammad. For this reason, in this article, I will explain the meaning of the surah. Of course, as Muslims, we must know that. So, you have to read this article to the end!

Before I explain the meaning of Surah Tabbat, I want to say, that the Surah is the Makkiyah. The meaning is, that the surah was revealed in Mecca before the Prophet Muhammad migrated to Medina. In the surah, there are five verses, twenty sentences, and seventy-seven letters.

The Verses of Surah Tabbat (Abu Lahab)

The verses of surah Tabbat (Abu Lahab) I mean is as follows;

تَبَّتۡ يَدَآ أَبِي لَهَبٖ وَتَبَّ ١ مَآ أَغۡنَىٰ عَنۡهُ مَالُهُۥ وَمَا كَسَبَ ٢ سَيَصۡلَىٰ نَارٗا ذَاتَ لَهَبٖ ٣ وَٱمۡرَأَتُهُۥ حَمَّالَةَ ٱلۡحَطَبِ ٤ فِي جِيدِهَا حَبۡلٞ مِّن مَّسَدِۢ ٥

May the hands of Abu Lahab be ruined, and ruined is he [1] His wealth will not avail him or that which he gained [2] He will [enter to] burn in a Fire of [blazing] flame [3] And his wife [as well] – the carrier of firewood [4] Around her neck is a rope of [twisted] fiber [5]. (Tabbat [111]; 1-5)

The Meaning of Surah Tabbat (Abu Lahab)

(تَبَّتۡ) The point is, “May be wretched.” The sentence is prayer.

(يَدَآ أَبِي لَهَبٖ) The point is, “Abu Lahab’s two hands.” Abu Lahab’s real name is Abdul Uzza bin Abdul Muttallib. As such, he was one of the uncles of the Prophet Muhammad.

(وَتَبَّ) The point is, “Abu Lahab has been harmed.”

(مَآ أَغۡنَىٰ عَنۡهُ مَالُهُۥ وَمَا كَسَبَ) The point is, that the wealth and work of Abu lahab will not be able to protect him from death. Historical data explains that he died seven days after the Battle of Badr.

(سَيَصۡلَىٰ نَارٗا ذَاتَ لَهَبٖ) The point is, that one day in the Hereafter Abu Lahab will go to Hell which has a very large fire.

(وَٱمۡرَأَتُهُ) The point is the wife of Abu Lahab. She is Umm Jamil al-Aura’, daughter of Harb. Thus, he is the sister of Abu Sufyan bin Harb.

(حَمَّالَةَ ٱلۡحَطَبِ) The point is, that Abu Lahab’s wife has died in a suffocated condition because she has been very hostile to the Prophet Muhammad.

(فِي جِيدِهَا حَبۡلٞ مِّن مَّسَدِۢ) The point is, that in the neck of Abu Lahab’s wife there is an iron chain.
