The Meaning of Surah Al-Ikhlas; A Best Explanation

Islam On Site: The Meaning of Surah Al-Ikhlas ~ Hi all readers! I think all of you already know what surah al-Ikhlas is. That is one of the suras in the Quran that explains about monotheism. In the surah there are four verses of the Quran, fifteen words, and forty-seven letters. As Muslims we must know that. Apart from that, we also have to know about its meaning. That’s why I wrote this article. So you have to read it to the end!

Before I explain the meaning of surah al-Ikhlas, I want to say that this surah has many other names. The point is that there are many terms to refer to this surah, so the term is not just surah al-Ikhlas. We can also mention the surah by these names or terms. Some other names or terms that I mean are; Surah al-Makrifah, Surah al-Jamal, Surah at-Tawhid, Surah an-Najat, Surah an-Nur, Surah al-Mu’awidhah, Surah al-Mani’ah, and Surah al-Bara’ah.

Allah sent surah al-Ikhlas to the Prophet Muhammad because there were some non-Muslims who asked him about Allah. A long dialogue ensued between him and them. It was in the middle of the dialogue that Allah revealed surah al-Ikhlas. The contents of sura al-Ikhlas are as follows;

قُلۡ هُوَ ٱللَّهُ أَحَدٌ ١ ٱللَّهُ ٱلصَّمَدُ ٢ لَمۡ يَلِدۡ وَلَمۡ يُولَدۡ ٣ وَلَمۡ يَكُن لَّهُۥ كُفُوًا أَحَدُۢ ٤

Say, “He is Allah, [who is] One [1] Allah, the Eternal Refuge [2] He neither begets nor is born [3] Nor is there to Him any equivalent [4].” (Al-Ikhlas [112]; 1-4).

(قُلۡ هُوَ ٱللَّهُ أَحَدٌ) The point is, “Say, O Muhammad, that Allah is God Almighty.” The point is that there is no god but Allah. Allah does not consist of several parts like humans who have hands, feet, stomach and so forth.

(ٱللَّهُ ٱلصَّمَدُ) The point is, that everything in the universe depends on Allah. There is no creature that does not depend on Allah.

(لَمۡ يَلِدۡ) The point is, that Allah does not bear children and do not have children. Of course it’s very different from creatures like humans, animals, plants, and so forth.

(وَلَمۡ يُولَدۡ) The point is, that Allah is not born and has no parents. Of course it’s very different from creatures that have fathers and mothers.

(وَلَمۡ يَكُن لَّهُۥ كُفُوًا أَحَدُۢ) The point is, that no creature is equal to Allah in all things, such as nature, essence, strength, will, etc., be it human, animal, plant, demon, angel, fish, and so forth. There is no one in common with Allah.
