Kissing; Can It Break Wudu or Not?

Hi all readers! For married couples, kissing is one thing that can add harmony in domestic life. Of course, we all know what kisses are, but not everyone kisses, including me! Honestly, I have never kissed because until this article I wrote I was not married. In Islamic teachings kissing can only be done by a married couple. How about a boyfriend? Of course, it should not be because men and women who are dating are not married.

The question about kisses I want to say is; can it break wudu or not?

Okay! Straight to!

As usual, before I answer the question above, I will first quote the hadith of Prophet Muhammad, which is specifically related to our discussion. The hadith I mean is as follows;

From Aisha, that Prophet sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam had kissed some of his wives then he went out to pray and he did not perform the ablution (wudu). The hadith is narrated by Ahmad.

All Readers! Before I explain the status of Islamic law regarding kissing, I would first like to say, that if we observe the hadith above, then we will understand that the Prophet Muhammad was very romantic towards his wives. Even though he was a Prophet, he did not forget to be romantic towards his wives. That can be understood from the hadith above, that he kissed one of his wives.

If we look at the verse of Quran, we will find information that touching the woman who is allowed to marry break ablution (wudu). Allah Ta’ala said;

O you who believe! do not go near prayer when you are Intoxicated until you know (well) what you say, nor when you are under an obligation to perform a bath– unless (you are) travelling on the road– until you have washed yourselves; and if you are sick, or on a journey, or one of you come from the privy or you have touched the women, and you cannot find water, betake yourselves to pure earth, then wipe your faces and your hands; surely Allah is Pardoning, Forgiving. (An-Nisa’ [4]; 43).

But, in the history of Islam, one problem cannot be seen only from one side, for example it is only seen from the side of Quran. One problem must be seen from many sides; hadith and opinions of legal experts. So is the kiss.

There are a number of things we need to know about the hadith above;

First; Holding your wife and kissing her does not break wudu. This opinion was uttered by Abu Hanifah. Asy-Syafi’i said, “Touching women who can be married without a barrier can cancel wudu.” Ahmad and Malik said, “Touching lust can break wudu.”

Second; According to Ahmad and Malik, kissing women (wives) coupled with lust can cancel the ablution. Hanafiyah sect said, “Kissing women (wives) that are not accompanied by lust can break wudu.” According to the Syafi’iyah sect, “Kissing women (wives) coupled with lust and without barriers can break wudu.”

After we observe the explanation above, we know that there are differences of opinion about the law of kissing with a wife. There is a legal expert who said that it canceled the ablution, but there were also those who said that it did not break the wudu with conditions. Thus, if we meet people who have different attitudes with us about it, then we do not need to act anarchically, as long as the differences are still based on acceptable arguments.

Now, do you understand? The problem is simple and the explanation that I have conveyed is clear. So, I hope you understand.

I think that’s enough discussion about the legal status of kissing; whether it can break wudu or not. If you want to ask, please ask!
