The Glory of Human Soul in Islam; A Best Explanation

In a number of previous articles, I have conveyed about humanity and the virtues behind the marriage of the Prophet Muhammad with some of his wives. In this article I will convey something more general in nature; about the glory of the human soul in the view of Islam. We must know about this, because this discussion will convey facts based on some data. I see that this discussion will also strengthen our beliefs about Islamic humanism.

Before I speak more about the glory of human soul in Islam, I will present some data to explain the purpose of this article’s theme. Allah Ta’ala said;

وَلَقَدۡ كَرَّمۡنَا بَنِيٓ ءَادَمَ وَحَمَلۡنَٰهُمۡ فِي ٱلۡبَرِّ وَٱلۡبَحۡرِ وَرَزَقۡنَٰهُم مِّنَ ٱلطَّيِّبَٰتِ وَفَضَّلۡنَٰهُمۡ عَلَىٰ كَثِيرٖ مِّمَّنۡ خَلَقۡنَا تَفۡضِيلٗا ٧٠

And surely, We have honored the children of Adam, and We carry them in the land and the sea, and We have given them of the good things, and We have made them to excel by an appropriate excellence over most of those whom We have created. (Al-Israa’ [17]; 70).

قُلۡ تَعَالَوۡاْ أَتۡلُ مَا حَرَّمَ رَبُّكُمۡ عَلَيۡكُمۡۖ أَلَّا تُشۡرِكُواْ بِهِۦ شَيۡ‍ٔٗاۖ وَبِٱلۡوَٰلِدَيۡنِ إِحۡسَٰنٗاۖ وَلَا تَقۡتُلُوٓاْ أَوۡلَٰدَكُم مِّنۡ إِمۡلَٰقٖ نَّحۡنُ نَرۡزُقُكُمۡ وَإِيَّاهُمۡۖ وَلَا تَقۡرَبُواْ ٱلۡفَوَٰحِشَ مَا ظَهَرَ مِنۡهَا وَمَا بَطَنَۖ وَلَا تَقۡتُلُواْ ٱلنَّفۡسَ ٱلَّتِي حَرَّمَ ٱللَّهُ إِلَّا بِٱلۡحَقِّۚ ذَٰلِكُمۡ وَصَّىٰكُم بِهِۦ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تَعۡقِلُونَ ١٥١

Say: Come I will recite what your Lord has forbidden to you– (remember) that you do not associate anything with Him and show kindness to your parents, and do not slay your children for (fear of) poverty– We provide for you and for them– and do not draw nigh to indecencies, those of them which are apparent and those which are concealed, and do not kill the soul which Allah has forbidden except for the requirements of justice; this He has enjoined you with that you may understand. (Al-An’aam [6]; 151).

وَنَضَعُ ٱلۡمَوَٰزِينَ ٱلۡقِسۡطَ لِيَوۡمِ ٱلۡقِيَٰمَةِ فَلَا تُظۡلَمُ نَفۡسٞ شَيۡ‍ٔٗاۖ وَإِن كَانَ مِثۡقَالَ حَبَّةٖ مِّنۡ خَرۡدَلٍ أَتَيۡنَا بِهَاۗ وَكَفَىٰ بِنَا حَٰسِبِينَ ٤٧

And We will set up a just balance on the day of resurrection, so no soul shall be dealt with unjustly in the least; and though there be the weight of a grain of mustard seed, (yet) will We bring it, and sufficient are We to take account. (Al-Anbiyaa’ [21]; 47).

In addition to a number of verses from the Qur’an above, I will also present some of the traditions of the Prophet Muhammad below;

عن أبي بكرة رضي الله عنه عن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال : من قتل معاهدا في غير كنهه حرم الله عليه الجنة

From Abu Bakrah radliyallaahu ‘anu from the Messenger of Allah sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam, he said, “Whoever has killed the unbelievers Mu’ahad (unbelievers who have secured the security of the Muslims) for no reason, Allah has forbidden Heaven to him.” (The hadith is narrated by Abu Dawud (2760), an-Nasa’i (4747), Ahmad (20393), ad-Darimi (2504), ath-Thayalisi (879), and al-Hakim (2631)).

روى أبو ذر رضي الله عنه عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم عن ربه عز وجل أنه قال : يا عبادي , إني حرمت الظلم على نفسي وجعلته بينكم محرما فلا تظالموا

Abu Dzarr radliyallaahu ‘anhu from the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam from his Lord (Allah) ‘Azza wa Jalla. He (Allah) said, “O my servants, in fact I have forbidden the shame of myself and I have made it forbidden among you. Then do not judge each other.” (The hadith is narrated by Muslim (2577), Ahmad (21458), al-Bukhari in al-Adad al-Mufarrad (490), Ibn Hibban (619), al-Baihaqi in Syu’abu al-Iymân (7088) and as- Sunan al-Kubra (11283)).

روى الإمام مسلم عن ابن أبي ليلى أن قيس بن سعد وسهل بن حنيف كانا بالقادسية , فمرت بهما جنازة , فقاما , فقيل لهما : إنها من أهل الأرض . فقالا : إن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم مرت به جنازة فقام , فقيل : إنه يهودي . فقال : أليست نفسا

Imam Muslim narrated from Ibn Abi Laila, that Qais bin Sa’ad and Sahal bin Hanif had been in Qadisiyah. There is a body that passes in front of them both. The two of them then stood up. Then it was said to both of them, “Surely, he is a resident of this area. (From the Magi in Persia) The two of them then replied, “Actually, there was once a body that passed in front of the Prophet sallallaaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam. He then stood up. Then it said, “Actually he is a Jew.” He then said, “Isn’t he a soul?” (The hadith is narrated by Imam Muslim (961) and Imam al-Bukhari (1250)).

Actually, there are still many verses of the Qur’an and hadith of the Prophet Muhammad related to the theme of this article. But I think what I have said above is enough to represent what I did not say.

All readers! if we look at some of the verses of the Qur’an and the hadith of the Prophet Muhammad above, we can conclude a number of things as follows;

One; The Prophet Muhammad and Islam greatly glorified the human soul. He and Islam did not justify any murder unless forced.

Two; The Prophet Muhammad said, that people who have killed non-Muslims who have secured security from Muslims will not be able to continue.

Three; The Prophet Muhammad greatly respected non-Muslims even though he died. We can find it in the hadith that explains, that he was willing to stand up in honor of the bodies of the Jews who were going to be buried.

Four; Allah has forbidden the shame of Himself and made it a forbidden thing among His servants.

Five; Islam strictly forbids tyranny.
