Day of Judgment and Its Signs According to Islam

In this article, I will explain the Day of Judgment and its signs. We need to know that believing in the existence of Doomsday is one of the foundations of faith. Without that, we cannot be called believers.

In teachings of Islam, the Day of Judgment is believed to be the end of life in the universe. On that day all living beings will die, both from the human group, animals, plants, angels, demons, and so on. They will all die except Allah, the God who is everlasting the Creator of life.

Judgment Day is also believed to be the day when all living things after they die will be resurrected and held accountable for everything they have done while living in the world. They will be shown on their deeds. Those who are good will be put into Heaven because of the good they have done. The wicked will get a reward in Hell for the evil they have done.

We can find a lot of information about Judgment Day in various verses of the Qur’an, of which are;

And on the day when We will gather them all together, then We will say to those who associated others (with Allah): Keep where you are, you and your associates; then We shall separate them widely one from another and their associates would say: It was not us that you served [28] Therefore, Allah is sufficient as a witness between us and you that we were quite unaware of your serving (us) [29]There shall every soul become acquainted with what it sent before, and they shall be brought back to Allah, their true Patron, and what they devised shall escape from them. [30]. (Yunus [10]; 28-30).

And be on your guard against a day when no soul shall avail another in the least neither shall any compensation be accepted from it, nor shall intercession profit it, nor shall they be helped. (Al-Baqarah [2]; 123).

On the day that every soul shall find present what it has done of good and what it has done of evil, it shall wish that between it and that (evil) there were a long duration of time; and Allah makes you to be cautious of (retribution from) Himself; and Allah is Compassionate to the servants. (Ali ‘Imraan [3]; 30).

There is an important thing that I have to say here, that there are many stages that will occur before in the end all the living people get rewarded according to the deeds they have done in the world. The stages that I mean are death, the resurrection of the grave, the field of mahsyar (the place where all beings are gathered to be held accountable), the calculation of deeds (reckoning), bridge (shirath), Heaven, and Hell. A Muslim must believe all that, that is all there is and is certain to happen.

Signs of Day of Judgment; That Has Happened, That Has Happened and Still Continues, That Has Not Happened

As a great certainty established by Allah, it can be said that Judgment Day is a phase of transition to eternal life. However, even though it can be said to be a phase, the appearance and occurrence of this phase is unknown to any creature except only Allah. Allah said;

People ask you about the hour; say: The knowledge of it is only with Allah, and what will make you comprehend that the hour may be nigh. (Al-Ahzaab [33]; 63).

The nature of the unseen Day of Judgment, which is unknown to the ready except for Allah, makes it impossible for us to know when that day will come. We also cannot make estimates with numbers. But that does not mean we cannot feel the close time of the day’s arrival. The signs of the arrival of the day have been announced in the Qur’an and the hadith of the Prophet Muhammad.

Among the signs of the coming of Judgment Day that have occurred is the division of the moon. It is as Allah has said;

The hour drew nigh and the moon did rend asunder. (Al-Qamar [54]; 1).

Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said;

I was sent (as a Prophet and Apostle), while I and (at the time of) the Day of Judgment were like this; he brought his index finger and middle finger closer (as a sign of the close time of the Day of Judgment).

As for the signs of the coming of Day of Judgment that have occurred and still continue to this day there are people who claim to be messengers of Allah. Prophet Muhammad said;

The Day of Judgment will not occur until the emergence of the deceased Dajjal-Dajjal, which amounts to about thirty people, all claim to be Allah’s messengers.

The number of servants who gave birth to their masters, the increasingly rampant poverty, and the many people competing to build tall buildings, also became signs of the coming of Judgment Day that had happened and still continues to this day. Prophet Muhammad said;

“One day when we were on the side of the Messenger of Allah, suddenly came to us a man whose clothes were so white, his hair so black, his trip could not be seen until he sat down in front of him and rested his knees on both His knees and put his palms on his thighs. He then said, “O Muhammad! Tell me about Islam.” Allah’s Messenger shallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said. “Islam is you testify that there is no god but Allah and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, you impose prayer, you issue Zakat, you fast in Ramadan, you perform Hajj if you are able to travel.” He then said, “You Right.” We were amazed at him, he asked him and confirmed him. He then said, “Tell me about the Faith!” He (Messenger of Allah) then said, “You believe in Allah, His books, His angels, His messengers, the last day, and you believe in fate, good and not good Bad.””He then said, “You are right.” He then said (again), “Tell me about Ihsan!” He (Messenger of Allah) then said, “You worship Allah as if you saw Him, if you do not see Him, then indeed He sees you. He said, “Tell me of the Day of Judgment (the day of qiyamah)!” He (Messenger of Allah) then said, “The man who is asked is not more understanding than the one who asks.” He then said, “Tell me of his signs (The Day of Judgment)!” He (Utusan Allah) said, “Among them if a servant has given birth to his master and if you see a poor person (who is not wearing footwear), dressed in rags, as a goat herd is already capable, they are competing to build high buildings.” Then off the man earlier. I calmed down for a moment then He (Messenger of Allah) asked me, “O Umar, you know who asked that?” I replied, “Allah and His Messenger know better.” He then said, “He is Gabriel coming to you teach about your religion.”

As for the great signs that the Day of Judgment will occur, there have not been ten kinds at all. The ten signs are as said by the prophet Muhammad;

Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam saw us remembering each other. Then he asked, “What are you remembering?” People answered, “We are remembering the Day of Judgment.” He said, “The Day of Judgment will not happen before you see ten signs; ad-Dukhan (smoke), Dajjal, ad-Dabbah (clever talking animal), sunrise from the west, the descent of Isa bin Maryam sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam, Yakjuj and Makjuj, three eclipses (one eclipse in the East, one eclipse in the West, one eclipse in the Arabian Peninsula), the last of which was a fire that came out of Yemen, which drove people to the Mahsyar field.

All readers! Thus, a brief explanation of the Day of Judgment and it’s signs. May we be among those who survived the catastrophe on the Day of Judgment. Amen!

I think that is enough for this article about the Day of Judgment and it’s signs. May be useful! Amen!
