Bridge (Ash-Shiraat or Al-Jisr) Towards Heaven ~ In this article I will explain about the bridge (ash-Shiraat or al-Jisr) that all beings must pass after having received a trial from Allah. This discussion is a series of discussions about life after humans were raised from the grave. After humans get judged by Allah for all their actions, they are required to pass the bridge to determine their future destiny; whether they will enter Heaven or fall into the abyss of Hell.
The bridge (ash-Shiraath or al-Jisr) is a great certainty that has been set by Allah for all humans. As a Muslim we have to believe it without any hesitation. That is because this bridge is one of a series of Doomsday days that we must believe. Without belief about that our faith is invalid.
Information about the bridge (ash-Shiraath or al-Jisr) can be found in the verses of the Qur’an and the hadith below;
And there is not one of you but shall come to it; this is an unavoidable decree of your Lord And We will deliver those who guarded (against evil), and We will leave the unjust therein on their knees . (Maryam ; 71-72).
The Messenger of Allah sallaallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said, “..Then the bridge (al-Jisr) was brought and then stretched on the surface of Jahannam.” We then asked, “O Messenger of Allah, how is the condition of the bridge?” He replied, “Slippery and able to slip. On top of it are hooked iron and barbed wire with a bent end. It (the bridge) is like a thorny tree in Najd known as Sa’dan tree. There are believers (who are) passing through it (the bridge) that are as fast as the blink of an eye, some are as fast as lightning, some are as fast as the wind, some are as fast as very fast horses running, and some are as fast as motorists. Then there are those who survived after teetering and some who were thrown into Hell. The last person crawls slowly.” (This hadith is narrated by al-Bukhari, 7439, and Muslim, 183).
The Prophet (Muhammad) sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said, “And laid the bridge (ash-Shiraath) on the surface of Jahannam. I and my people are the first people who will pass it. No one said at that time except the messengers. And, the prayers of the Tusan at that time were, “O Allah, save! Save!”” (The hadith is narrated by al-Bukhari, 6204).
وزاد أبو سعيد : بلغني أن الجسر أدق من الشعرة وأحد من السيف
Abu Said added, “That the news has come to me, that the bridge is thinner than the hair and sharper than the sword.” (The hadith is narrated by Muslim, 183).
Actually, there is still a lot of information about the bridge (ash-Shiraat or al-Jisr). But my data that I have conveyed above is enough to be used as a basic knowledge about it. I will not explain it as a whole. If you want to know about that, you can see for yourself in the hadith references.
Now, if we understand the information above, then of course we can conclude the following:
One; Bridge (ash-Shiraath or al-Jisr) is a certainty that mankind must pass on the Day of Judgment before they are in Heaven or Hell.
Two; Later, the bridge (ash-Shiraath or al-Jisr) will be spread over Hell’s Hell to be passed by mankind.
Three; The condition of the bridge (ash-Shiraath or al-Jisr) is very slippery and can slip, very sharply beyond the sharpness of the sword.
Four; The shape is thinner than the hair.
Five; The conditions of believers when passing the bridge (ash-Shiraath or al-Jisr) are various; some are as fast as the blink of an eye, some are as fast as lightning, some are as fast as the wind, some are as fast as a very fast horse running, and some are as fast as the driver of a vehicle.
Six; The person who will first pass the bridge (ash-Shiraath or al-Jisr) is the Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam and his people.
That is a brief description of bridge (Ash-Shiraat or Al-Jisr) towards Heaven. Hopefully one day we can cross the bridge safely Amin!
