Abu Talib and Abdul Mutalib; Two Great Heroes of Prophet Muhammad

Islam Center: Hi all readers! In this article I will explain a little about Abu Talib and Abdul Mutalib. Abu Talib is his grandfather. Abdul Mutalib is his uncle. After Aminah, Prophet’s mother, passed away, he had no more parents. It was his grandfather who took care of him. After his grandfather passed away, his uncle took care of him. So, it is no exaggeration to say that both of them are important heroes to him.

Many Islamic historical data say that when Prophet Muhammad was six years old, Aminah, his mother, died. A six-year-old child is a young child. Rarely do we find such a small child can care for himself.

But Prophet Muhammad was still lucky. He has a very dear grandfather and uncle. They were widowed after his father and mother died. There are a few important things about that which I will describe in this article.

Abu Talib; Grandfather and Great Hero for Prophet Muhammad

The Data of Islamic history explains that after Aminah, the mother of Muhammad died, he was raised by Abdul Mutalib. Abdul Mutalib was his own grandfather. Abdul Mutalib loved him deeply.

Abdul Mutalib’s love for Prophet Muhammad was very evident one day. Previously I would like to say, that Abdul Mutalib was the leader of the Quraisy tribe who took care of the Ka’bah. Under the auspices of Ka’bah, the mat was devoted to Abdul Mutalib. No one was Abdul Mutalib’s son who dared to sit on it because he was very respectful of their father.

One day the small Prophet Muhammad came and sat on the mat. Actually, all his uncles wanted him to sit in the back. But Abdul Mutalib forbade his children from doing that. Abdul Mutalib still let him sit on his mat. Abdul Mutalib then wiped his back and said, “Indeed my son (my grandson) has a position.”

Abdul Mutalib loved Prophet Muhammad very much. He was one of the people who played an important role in his life. Unfortunately, not a lot of historical data tells about it. But, clearly, he is one of the few people who still follow the religion brought by Prophet Isa which is straight.

Not long after that Abdul Mutalib died. At that time Prophet Muhammad was eight years old. In other words, Abdul Mutalib cared for him for two years. At the age of six he lost his mother. Two years later he lost a grandfather. He is very sad!

The small Prophet Muhammad participated in the process of burying Abdul Mutalib. Historical data says that at that time he cried very loudly, that there were no more powerful cries that could match his cry before that.

Abdul Mutalib; Uncle and Great Hero for Prophet Muhammad

Maybe I need to say again, that Abdul Mutalib had many children from many wives. Abdullah and Abu Talib, were two brothers born to one mother. Because that was before Abdul Mutalib died, he advised Abu Talib to care for the small Prophet Muhammad.

Abu Talib greatly respected the will of Abdul Mutalib. Abu Talib loved Prophet Muhammad more than he felt for his own children. He did not sleep before Prophet Muhammad slept. He was always with Prophet Muhammad wherever Prophet Muhammad went.

I did not find details of history of role of Abu Talib when he took care of the young Prophet Muhammad. But a lot of historical data explains that he loved Prophet Muhammad very much, even when Prophet Muhammad had received revelations from Allah to teach Islam to people.

One proof of Abu Talib’s love for Prophet Muhammad is that Abu Talib allowed him to herd sheep. Maybe it looks strange, how could permission to pasture sheep be proof of love?

I need to say here, that at that time, among the Arabs, herding goats was not a shame. Many children of the Arab nation’s dignitaries did that. Someone who grazes goats has a lot of knowledge that is not shared by others, especially knowledge about nature. Allah Ta’ala said;

وَلَكُمۡ فِيهَا جَمَالٌ حِينَ تُرِيحُونَ وَحِينَ تَسۡرَحُونَ ٦

And there is beauty in them for you when you drive them back (to home), and when you send them forth (to pasture). (An-Nahl [16]; 6).

I did not find historical data specifically explaining that Abu Talib was a follower of Prophet Muhammad in Islam. But there are actually differences of opinion about that. Some say that he died as a non-Muslim. Because of that, in the discourse on Islamic theology, he became the lightest person in Hell’s torment. But there are also those who say that he became a Muslim at the end of his life. That is, in the second opinion, in the hereafter he is a survivor.

Abu Talib had a very big role in the life of Prophet Muhammad. Abu Talib often defended Prophet Muhammad from interference from his enemies when he preached. Abu Talib was able to do anything to maintain his safety, especially when he spread Islam in Mecca.

All Readers! That is a brief explanation of Abu Talib and Abdul Mutalib. They both are two people who contributed greatly in his life. May Allah’s grace always be bestowed upon them both!

See you again!
