The Quran, in addition to being a holy book for Muslims, is also a source of vast knowledge, including the history of ancient peoples.

That is why there are so many names found in it. Of course, not all the names mentioned in the Quran are suitable; some are bad, like Abu Lahab. However, there are also many good names that can be used as names for baby boys.

I will not cover all the names in the Quran. In this article, I will only explain four names. These names are Abdullah, Muhammad, Ulin Nuha, and Ulul Albab.

Islamic Baby Boy Names from the Quran and Their Meanings

Abdullah (عَبْدُ اللهِ)

In Arabic, the meaning of the word "Abdullah" is "servant of Allah." The name is used for males. The female equivalent, "servant of Allah," is "Amatullah (أَمَةُ اللهِ)." In Islamic history, "Abdullah" was also the name of the father of Prophet Muhammad.

We find the phrase "Abdullah" in the following verse of the Quran:

قَالَ إِنِّي عَبۡدُ ٱللَّهِ ءَاتَىٰنِيَ ٱلۡكِتَٰبَ وَجَعَلَنِي نَبِيّٗا ٣٠

"[Isa] said, 'Indeed, I am the servant of Allah. He has given me the Scripture and made me a prophet.'" (Maryam [19]: 30)

Muhammad (مُحَمَّدٌ)

In Arabic, the meaning of the word "Muhammad" is "the praiseworthy." This is also the name of our Prophet, Muhammad. On earth, he was known as "Muhammad," and in the heavens, he is called "Ahmad (أَحْمَدُ)."

The Quran mentions "Muhammad" in several verses, including:

مَّا كَانَ مُحَمَّدٌ أَبَآ أَحَدٖ مِّن رِّجَالِكُمۡ وَلَٰكِن رَّسُولَ ٱللَّهِ وَخَاتَمَ ٱلنَّبِيِّ‍ۧنَۗ وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ بِكُلِّ شَيۡءٍ عَلِيمٗا ٤٠

"Muhammad is not the father of any one of your men, but he is the Messenger of Allah and the last of the prophets. And Allah is ever, of all things, Knowing." (Al-Ahzab [33]: 40)

وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَعَمِلُواْ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ وَءَامَنُواْ بِمَا نُزِّلَ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٖ وَهُوَ ٱلۡحَقُّ مِن رَّبِّهِمۡ كَفَّرَ عَنۡهُمۡ سَيِّ‍َٔاتِهِمۡ وَأَصۡلَحَ بَالَهُمۡ ٢

"And those who believe and do righteous deeds and believe in what has been sent down upon Muhammad, and it is the truth from their Lord, He will remove from them their misdeeds and improve their condition." (Muhammad [47]: 2)

Ulin Nuha (أُوْلِى النُّهَى)

In Arabic, "Ulin Nuha" means "a person of reason" or "an intelligent person." This term is mentioned in two verses of the Quran:

كُلُواْ وَٱرۡعَوۡاْ أَنۡعَٰمَكُمۡۚ إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَأٓيَٰتٖ لِّأُوْلِي ٱلنُّهَىٰ ٥٤

"Eat [therefrom] and pasture your livestock. Indeed, in that are signs for those of intelligence." (Ta Ha [20]: 54)

أَفَلَمۡ يَهۡدِ لَهُمۡ كَمۡ أَهۡلَكۡنَا قَبۡلَهُم مِّنَ ٱلۡقُرُونِ يَمۡشُونَ فِي مَسَٰكِنِهِمۡۚ إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَأٓيَٰتٖ لِّأُوْلِي ٱلنُّهَىٰ ١٢٨

"Then, has it not become clear to them how many generations We destroyed before them as they walk among their dwellings? Indeed, in that are signs for those of intelligence." (Ta Ha [20]: 128)

Ulul Albab (أُوْلُوْ الْأَلْبَابِ / أَوْلِى الْأَلْبَابِ)

"Ulul Albab" refers to "people of understanding" or "those who possess intellect." The term is frequently used in the Quran to describe individuals who contemplate and reflect deeply on the signs of Allah.

In Arabic, the meaning of the phrase "Ulil Albab or Ulul Albab" is "people of understanding" or "those endowed with intellect." This phrase is similar in meaning to the names mentioned above. There are many verses in the Quran that contain this phrase. Some of them are as follows:

وَلَكُمۡ فِي ٱلۡقِصَاصِ حَيَوٰةٞ يَٰٓأُوْلِي ٱلۡأَلۡبَٰبِ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تَتَّقُونَ ١٧٩

And there is [preservation of] life for you in legal retribution, O people of understanding, that you may become righteous. (Al-Baqarah [2]; 179).

يُؤۡتِي ٱلۡحِكۡمَةَ مَن يَشَآءُۚ وَمَن يُؤۡتَ ٱلۡحِكۡمَةَ فَقَدۡ أُوتِيَ خَيۡرٗا كَثِيرٗاۗ وَمَا يَذَّكَّرُ إِلَّآ أُوْلُواْ ٱلۡأَلۡبَٰبِ ٢٦٩

He grants wisdom to whom He wills, and whoever is given wisdom has certainly been given much good. But none will remember except those of understanding. (Al-Baqarah [2]; 269).
