In the previous paragraphs, I explained that there are two types of Zina committed sexually: Zina before marriage and Zina after marriage. The consequences for these two types of Zina differ.

The fifth important point regarding the consequences of committing Zina in Islam that I will explain now is the consequences of committing Zina of the eyes. It is crucial for you to understand this because it is another important aspect of Zina of the eyes that must be well understood.

In general, the consequences of committing Zina of the eyes are as follows:

  • Zina of the eyes causes the soul of the person who has committed it to be restless. Why? Because they have seen something that is forbidden in Islam. You must always remember that sin will cause the soul of the one who has committed it to be uneasy.
  • Fornication of the eyes will disturb the concentration of the person who has committed it. Why? Because the forbidden things they have seen will affect their memory. They will remember it often, perhaps even all the time. In fact, it is very likely that they will recall it at moments when they need to concentrate completely, such as during prayer.
  • Zina of the eyes will motivate the person who has committed it to engage in other negative behaviors, especially if the Zina of the eyes involves watching inappropriate content.
  • Fornication of the eyes will diminish the self-esteem of the person who has committed it, or even eliminate it entirely.
  • The eyes of the person who has committed Zina of the eyes will be punished in Hell if they do not receive Allah’s forgiveness.

Consequences of Committing Zina of the Eyes in the Quran

The sixth important point regarding the consequences of committing Zina in Islam that I will explain now is the consequences of committing Zina of the eyes according to the Quran. It is essential for you to understand this because it is one of the important aspects of Zina of the eyes that must be clearly comprehended.

At the time I wrote this article, I have not found any explanation regarding the consequences of committing Zina of the eyes in the Quran. I believe that all Islamic law experts share my view because Zina of the eyes is a branch of the discussion on Zina. Additionally, Zina of the eyes is a type of minor sin that can be erased through wudu.

We can find commands in the Quran to avoid Zina of the eyes. Below are some relevant Quranic verses:

Tell the believing men to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts. That is purer for them. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what they do. (An-Nur [24]; 30).

And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their chests and not expose their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands’ fathers, their sons, their husbands’ sons, their brothers, their brothers’ sons, their sisters’ sons, their women, that which their right hands possess, or those male attendants having no physical desire, or children who are not yet aware of the private aspects of women. And let them not stamp their feet to make known what they conceal of their adornment. And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed. (An-Nur [24]; 30).

From Ibn Abbas radliyallahu anhuma, “Al-Fadl bin Abbas radliyallahu anhu once followed the Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. Then a woman from Khats’am came. Al-Fadl then saw her, and she saw him. The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam then turned Al-Fadl’s face in the other direction. The woman then said, “O Messenger of Allah! Indeed, the obligation that Allah has given to His servants is Hajj. I knew that my father was very old. He is unable to travel; Can I do Hajj for him? He replied, “Yes.” This incident occurred during the Farewell Hajj.” The Hadith is narrated by Al-Bukhari and Muslim.

Consequences of Committing Zina After Marriage in the Quran

The twelfth important point regarding the consequences of committing Zina in Islam that I will explain now is the consequences of committing Zina after marriage in the Quran.

And whoever among you cannot [find] the means to marry free, believing women, then [he may marry] from those whom your right hands possess of believing slave girls. And Allah is most knowing regarding your faith. You [believers] are of one another. So, marry them with the permission of their people and give them their due compensation according to what is acceptable. [They should be] chaste, neither [of] those who commit unlawful intercourse randomly nor those who take [secret] lovers. But once they are sheltered in marriage, if they should commit adultery, then for them is half the consequences for free [unmarried] women. This [allowance] is for him among you who fears sin, but to be patient is better for you. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful. (An-Nisa’ [4]: 25).

Consequences of Committing Zina After Marriage in the Hadith

The thirteenth important point regarding the consequences of committing Zina in Islam that I will explain now is the consequences of committing Zina after marriage in the hadith. I want you to understand this point well, as it is crucial in our discussion.

From Abu Hurairah radliyallahu anhu, he said, "There was a Muslim who once came to the Messenger of Allah (Prophet Muhammad) sallallahu alayhi wa sallam while he was in the mosque. The Muslim then called him, "O Messenger of Allah, indeed I have committed Zina." He then turned away from the Muslim. The person repeated his statement, "O Messenger of Allah, indeed I have committed Zina." This was repeated four times. When that person had testified for himself four times, Allah’s Messenger then called him and asked, "Are you crazy?" The person replied, "No." He then asked, "Are you married?" The person answered, "Yes." Allah’s Messenger sallallahu alayhi wa sallam then said, "Go with him and lash him." This hadith was narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim.

Dear readers! If we understand the hadith above, we can conclude that the consequences of committing Zina after marriage in the hadith is to be whipped until the person who commits it dies.
