Why is Salawat So Important to Muslims? ~ Hi, dear readers! In this article, I will explain something that is very important for Muslims: the significance of reading Salawat. I think we all know what it means to pray for the Prophet Muhammad. Every day, we mention his name at least ten times during our prayers (salat). Therefore, it is essential for us to understand why this practice is so important to Muslims.

Before I delve deeper into why reading Salawat holds such importance for Muslims, I must highlight a key point. If we read the Quran, we will find a verse that explains that Allah and all the angels recite Salawat. This verse directly commands us to recite Salawat (to pray for the Prophet Muhammad) and emphasizes its urgency for all of us as Muslims.

Quranic Verses About the Importance of Salawat for Muslims

The Quran regarding why Salawat is so important to Muslims states the following:

إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ وَمَلَٰٓئِكَتَهُۥ يُصَلُّونَ عَلَى ٱلنَّبِيِّۚ يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ صَلُّواْ عَلَيۡهِ وَسَلِّمُواْ تَسۡلِيمًا ٥٦

Indeed, Allah confers blessings upon the Prophet, and His angels [ask Him to do so]. O you who have believed, ask [Allah to confer] blessings upon him and ask [Allah to grant him] peace. (Al-Ahzab [33]: 56)

The first conclusion we can draw from this Quranic verse is that if Allah and all His angels recite Salawat, then we must do the same. Furthermore, it’s important to understand that when Allah recites Salawat for Prophet Muhammad, it signifies His mercy towards him. When the angels recite Salawat for Prophet Muhammad, they are invoking Allah's mercy upon him. When we recite Salawat, we pray that Allah continues to grant mercy to him, enabling him (Prophet Muhammad) to intercede (shafaat) for us and that Allah forgives our sins. This understanding is crucial, and we must grasp its significance.

Hadith About Reasons Why Salawat Is So Important to Muslims

In addition to the aforementioned Quranic verses, we can also find the importance of reading Salawat in the hadith.

From Abu Hurairah radliyallahu anhu, the Prophet (Muhammad) sallallahu alaihi wa sallam said, "All utterances that do not begin with 'Al-Hamdulillah' and a prayer for me (reciting Salawat) will be interrupted, hindered, and stripped of all blessings."

Dear Readers! The above hadith is just one of many that explain why reading Salawat is so important. In fact, there are numerous hadiths that elaborate on this topic. I will discuss another hadith in the next few articles, Insha Allah.

From the hadith above, we understand that reciting Salawat can bring blessings to our speech or conversations. We can also conclude that reading Salawat enhances the goodness of our words. This is one of the reasons why reading Salawat holds great importance for Muslims.
